Sometimes we get so busy with our daily chores and never have the time to think how a couple of discoveries have made life easier and comfortable for us, and how our grandmothers and mothers had really worked hard without having these gadgets to help them around.

Grandma who lives in the village came over to visit us for a week and was surprised to see a range of whole new gadgets used in our kitchen. She was fascinated by these new discoveries and was amazed, and sure was enthusiastic in learning how they work and how they make our lives easier.

The Dishwasher: In India the dishwasher was introduced only a couple years ago. The dishwasher was a whole new concept for her, she couldn’t imagine, how the dishwasher did such a remarkable job in washing and drying the dishes.

The microwave: The microwave has been around for a while now, but since she had never used it was new to her. It does a wonderful job of reheating the food and did help with defrosting. She always made fresh meals and served everyone nice fresh meals every day.

The RO filter: Grandma did not have to use a RO water filter and did not know how to use it, but once she learnt how it helps us by filtering the impurities in the water she was thankful we had a filter like this.

The food processor: She would always chop or cut all the vegetables using the chopping board, and when she saw me using the vegetable chopper, she was astonished and said, “That was fast”.

The Rice cooker: Rice cooker had been around for a while now, but still we do not use it a whole lot in India, we cook the rice in a stock pot, but for people who have full time jobs, its a boon, grandma actually enjoyed eating rice and was amazed to see how this electric rice cooker worked just fine. She did like the fact that we did not have to wait for it to get ready and would turn off once it was done.

The salt and pepper grinder: She really loved to cook and was fond of grinding her own spices at home, by using traditional methods, when she saw the salt and pepper grinder, she was confused and did ask me to grind the spices in advance this way I would save on time, she explained.

The coconut grater: Grated coconut is used quiet frequently in the Indian cuisine; she was surprised to see the newest version of the coconut grater, while they always used the old traditional ones.

The coffee maker: The coffee maker did help us a lot every morning, and the nice hot coffee felt very refreshing, but grandma had never tried a cup of coffee made from the coffee maker, she still likes the old traditional way of making coffee.

The apple chopper: This was very new to her, and she felt, we could cut an apple with our hands just fine.

The hand blender: To puree tomatoes or to make milkshakes, or to make nice chutney, she did not understandthe use but she enjoyed drinking the milkshake.

The car vacuum: This machine is very useful even at home, to clean in hard to reach areas, and leave the place looking clean and dust free. She believed in using her hands and the broom, but once she saw the area getting dust free she felt good about using it.

The grilled sandwich maker: The sandwich maker was introduced to her on a Sunday morning, when I decided to make some tempting grilled sandwiches. After trying these grilled sandwiches, she actually enjoyed, and was now feeling good about all these new gadgets. She enjoyed her trip.

Can you imagine life without these gadgets; they help us make our lives comfortable and easy.
